Home » Phase Two – Tallinding Project – Serrekunda, The Gambia
|Because of the success of the Nursery the village elders asked us to continue with more building to accommodate the children as they got older and prevent them having to walk many miles to a Lower Basic School if indeed there is a place for them in the few schools available. We continued and embarked upon a further two blocks each of four classrooms with a headmaster’s office and store. Enrolment in these new classrooms commenced in 2007, so taking the children on to the age of 11. The Villagers and Local School Governors decreed that the School should be called ‘Carter Nursery & Lower Basic’ and registered it as such.
This was now becoming a large school and we had to improve the facilities. A proper toilet block was installed and also a kitchen for the provision of a hot meal in the school day (2010). A wall was built around the school area for security of both the buildings and the ever increasing number of children (2011).
At this point we realised that this was not a short term involvement and decided that we needed to register the project as a Charity in the UK and a NGO in The Gambia, which was promptly done.
