Sponsoring a child – Tallinding Project – Serrekunda, The Gambia
Because there is a great deal of poverty in the area around the school we introduced a sponsorship scheme – one to one support – to enable the poorest children to attend school. With advice from the teachers and headmaster we aim to support orphans and children from single parent families who struggle to afford school. Weaim to have no child excluded from basic education because of poverty..
We have a small office in The Gambia and through this we encourage visitors to the school and in the UK we also promote sponsorship when talking to groups. Our office is staffed by 2 local ladies who help with the running of the school and report back to us.
Amongst our 1000+ children are quite a number of orphans and children from single parent families. Many of these are very poor indeed and this is where we try to find sponsors to support them through their school life.
A payment of £10 or €12.5 per month pays for
A child’s school fees
2 pairs of shoes
Lunch daily in term time
Books, pens & pencils
Sponsors get each term a school report, photograph and a letter from the child (if they are too young to write a letter a picture is suggested).
Sponsors are able to write to their sponsored child and send gifts and cards if they wish.
Sponsors are also acknowledged on plaques on the school wall.
Extras: £20 buys a bag of rice which will feed a family for a month. This is a cost effective way of sending a ‘Christmas’ gift.
